The difference between 1D (typically EAN) and 2D (typically QR) barcode.

In the following article, we tasked you with putting you into the world of 1D and 2D barcode, the use of which facilitates the work and saves time in processing business processes. The end of the article describes a number of basic differences between 1D and 2D barcode, which should make it easier for you to make decisions when making a 1D or 2D mobile terminal with a barcode reader.

Different technologies are used to read them. The largest and main difference between a 1D and a 2D barcode is the amount of information that can be stored in the code.

Since the reading of 1D and 2D barcode is realized by different technologies, it is necessary to read them to use different hardware:

A 1D barcode reader can be used to read 1D code

To read 2D (and 1D) code, you need to use a 2D barcode reader (generally you can say that almost all devices that support 2D code reading also read the 1D barcode)

A device for reading 1D or 2D (i 1D) code may look the same at first glance, but they differ at least in the barcode scanner used to be placed on the device.

1D barcode

1D barcodes are commonly found on consumer goods and tend to be numerical, and some of them also alpha-numeric (e.g. Code128 can handle all characters from the ASCII 128 table). These codes use a series of black lines and white spaces between them with a width variable to encode.

1D barcodes are suitable for scrambling product IDs or short tags, but that's about all we can expect from them, because strings that are more than 25-30 characters long, which is impractical for normal use (it takes up a lot of space, or needs to be loaded from a larger height, which every reader may not handle). However, despite their low data capacity, these barcodes are some of the most widely used thanks to their easy creation and easy to read.

The largest meaning is to acquire 1D barcodes only after connecting to the database. Possible examples of using a 1D barcode:

Scan the barcode of an article at the checkout in the supermarket. When the code is load, the most common item ID, an article appears on the cassava and its price, which is invoked from the database. These barcode systems are a necessity for large retailers and help increase inventory accuracy and save time.

2D barcode

 2D codes, such as. QR Code, or PDF417, use patterns of squares, hexagons, points and other shapes to encode data. Since the 2D code uses these nuts, it should no longer be called a barcode, as this label is confusing. Due to their structure, 2D codes can contain more data than 1D barcodes (up to 2000 characters), while appearing in a physically smaller format. The data is encoded on the basis of both the horizontal and vertical arrangement of the pattern and are therefore read in two dimensions. Your website address and contact information can now be represented by a 2 × 2 cm black square.

The largest meaning is 2D codes in cases where it is necessary to transfer more data without connecting to the database. Possible examples of 2D code usage:

QR code is used to pay for invoice payments via mobile banking application

The 2D code PDF417 is used in the aviation industry as a static database because it can carry up to 1800 characters. For example, a ticket code may contain flight details.

In marketing, the 2D code (QR code) is used to communicate information and promote sales - after loading the code, the customer is redirected to the company's discount share website. The advantage is the ability to scan the QR code with virtually any phone equipped with a camera and simple decoding software.

The 2D code is basically fit anywhere where there are high demands on space savings (small subject, need for a small label) or more information needs to be encoded. An example might be printing a small-size label with a 2D code that contains information about the device, the date of manufacture, the owner information, or the recommended service inspection intervals.

The 2D barcode contains not only alphanumeric information, but can include images, website addresses, voice and other types of binary data in its encoding. Using 2D code first and foremost means that you can use information whether or not you are connected to the database. A large amount of information can travel with an item marked with a 2D code.

For 1D code, the number of sedate characters varies by type (Code 128, Code39, EAN-8 ..). For example, a Code39 1D barcode carries up to 43 characters. The main reason for limiting the size of 1D code is the inability of the 1D scanner to read very wide 1D codes.

 Up to several thousand characters can be written to 2D codes. The most well-known example of this group is the QR code, which has expanded greatly in connection with the marketing activities of companies.

The 1D code is the most meaningful at the moment it is connected to the database (e.g. Scanning the code by the salesperson on the cassava, which bears the product ID and, according to its ID, retrieves the price information of the product from the database).

In contrast, 2D code can serve as a separate static database (without linking to IS) because it can carry a large amount of data that you can retrieve from the label directly in the field (for example, machine setup instructions).

 The 1D barcode laser reader uses linear reading on the x-axis and can therefore only read linear 1D barcodes (black and white bar rotation).

The 2D code reader uses dualdimensional reading - i.e. x-axis and y-axis and can therefore mostly read both two-dimensional 2D and linear 1D codes.

Before procuring barcode readers, we recommend that you consider what purpose they will be used for, or, where appropriate, for what purpose the company may use in the future. Most 2D barcode readers (such as PDA FLORES 2D) are also compatible with 1D barcodes, giving the user more flexibility in the possible future use of the reader.

 Large storage or outdoor areas that can't be covered by Wi-Fi? PdA with barcode reader can solve this for you.

You own or operate large indoor warehouses or outdoor areas (e.g. Storage of building material outside the indoor warehouse) where the introduction and operation of wi-fi networks comes out to hundreds of thousands of canoes? Are you considering as a cheaper option to acquire mobile PDAs, where barcode reader and mobile data communication support is integrated? Let's take a look at the pros and cons of both solutions and their combination.

Advantages of introducing a Wi-Fi network:

- high speed of communication,

- does not incur the cost of data communication,

- better control over connected devices to the Wi-Fi network.

Disadvantages of introducing a Wi-Fi network:

 - high initial cost of introducing a Wi-Fi network (the cost of introducing a Wi-Fi network in sprawling warehouses of up to hundreds of thousands of SKK depending on the number of access points and the required minimum network speed),

- the cost of electricity consumption by network elements,

- the need to buy mobile terminals with barcode reader, which allow connection to wi-fi network and are not just a simple keyboard reader, ie. They allow the installation of warehouse management applications (most often mobile terminals with Windows CE OS, Android OS).

Advantages of using PDAs with barcode reader with mobile data communication:

 - the cost of electricity consumption by network elements does not incur costs,

- you are not tied to any fixed point and you can use your device anywhere where mobile data is available,

- for communication with the server to transfer data to your company's information system, there is no need for a fast data connection (these are kB data units) and a 2G connection is sufficient (a signal that is available for mobile devices even if you are moving between high metal racks and under the metal roof of the warehouse).

Advantages of using PDAs with barcode reader with mobile data communication:

 - data communication costs are incurred (any mobile terminal with a barcode reader must have a SIM card with a paid data package),

- the application may not work properly at lower connection speeds (2G/EDGE) or may have a longer response time,

- without achievability the connection to mobile data can not communicate with the server (there are still such places in the Slovak Republic) -> map of mobile data coverage in the Slovak Republic can be found here:

- the need to buy mobile terminals with barcode reader, which allow connection to mobile data and are not only a simple keyboard reader, but allow the installation of applications for management of the warehouse (most often mobile terminals with Windows CE OS, Android OS).

 The above solutions can be combined with each other to reduce as much as possible the input investment to introduce barcode warehouse management with a view to maintaining data processing speed requirements.

An example may be a trading company that has 5 positdown warehouses of goods of different sizes. Most uses warehouses 1 and 2 (side by side), which are the largest and are placed in them goods with the highest turnaround. Most deliveries are handled precisely from these 2 warehouses (but not except that there are items from all 5 warehouses on one dispensary). The company is considering introducing online barcode readers to speed up the work of warehousers and reduce error rates when shipping goods. The use of the barcode reader is also required when processing stock inventories.

 In this case, it is a good thing to consider procuring Wi-Fi to warehouse 1 and 2, where the most stockmen are moving and there are the greatest speed requirements for the handling of stock documents. For the remaining and less utilizing warehouses 3, 4 and 5 we recommend the use of communication via mobile data.

In real-world operations, the warehouseiser then picks out warehouses 1 and 2 using a wi-fi-connected mobile app. If the wi-fi signal gets out of the way to warehouses 3, 4 and 5, the mobile PDA automatically connects to mobile data.

During a link from Wi-Fi to cellular data, the app stops waiting to receive a signal. At this point, you can't work with the app because you're working with online data that's not available at that point. Once you've reconnected, you'll continue the app where you left off (your IS solution vendor's application must support the possible return to the document being worked out after the connection has been lost).

In the event of a Wi-Fi network outage, mobile data can be used for warehouse 1 and 2 to operate, as their area is also covered.

 We recommend: if you consider purchasing mobile terminals with a barcode reader in your warehouses (production and other locations) to operate via mobile data (or even in combination with Wi-Fi networks), purchase one test piece. For your warehouses and places to use your mobile terminal, go to mobile data on and warehouse applications turned on (test some storage app features directly against the server).
